Fallen Magician The Magician Rebellion Book 2 eBook Curtis Cornett

PRO's
The story line is amazing in the plot line development.
No one person has a easy button, in fact a lot of the book is based on the main character dealing with a major limitation to his abilities.
The world is constantly developing and becoming more robust to the reader. They go back to places from the first book using the knowledge of people who took part in the back story. Something I've found pretty rare in indie writers who tend to use a place once and move on in a constant moving plot.
The main characters discuss things based on what happened earlier leaving what actually happened earlier in the book unsaid and expect the reader to understand where the interaction, and their points of view where coming from. It's nice not to be spoon feed all the time.

CON's
The character development takes a back stage to the world around the characters.
The magic system is well rounded but could be better described, I believe only a basic description of the different types of magic and what each could do was only explained at the start of the first book. Several of the different schools of magic remain mostly a mystery.

My rating
I would give it more like 4.75 stars, but I rounded up because I'm that kind of guy. After reading I don't even know how many fantasy books where the characters were over developed, and the plot line consisted of "oh god bad guys RUN RUN RUN, until the teenager gets strong and wins easily". It was nice to read something that had more substance to the plot and the world around the main characters than just there own group development. that being said I think it swung just slightly past perfect, ever so slightly.

I hope that helps,
In general read it, It's refreshing and different than most of the 3 dollar books out and about.

I am waiting for the next installment impatiently by the way if the author reads these things!!!

Fallen Magician The Magician Rebellion Book 2 eBook Curtis Cornett Reviews

First off, first. Yay.
Second; I would like to if possible give this book about 4 and 1/4 stars. It deserves more than 4, but is not quite a five yet. Here's why
Curtis writes a wonderful tale of the oppressed and the oppressors, balance shifts and toppled regimes. The darkest characters are extremists of either side and are truly terrifying for their radical actions. There is a set of specialties (necromancy, elemancy, enchantry and manipulation) and defined magic that is good for segregating a faction of characters (the Collective) by what they do. It's very useful in classifying expectations for the reader.
The rebellion is well thought out and, although the reader is inevitably rooting for one side, he is kept questioning the gray and grey sides of the morals in the conflict.
A well made fantasy book all around.
My only critiques of the book are these two Curtis substitutes much of his character development for (admittedly well-made) plot and background- the character's tend to be a little flat, lacking complex motivations or high-depth connection because of it.
The other is that much of the magic of the series is simply hand waved- little explanation is given to how or with what a character casts a spell, just that they do.

In short, a very well made story that could use a bit more development in the 'fantasy-realm-physics' (how the magic works) and on more development on the characters- I'd like to see how smaller events have small but noticeable changes on characters, rather than just advancing the plot. I tend to be critical, so take my critiques with a grain of salt, but nonetheless these minor flaws are present.
4 and 1/4 stars
Good story, worth reading at least once, but please read Rogue Magician beforehand or you will be hopelessly lost.

Lastly, comments for the author (if he reads this)-
Byrn often has to mind-over-matter his magical abilities to prevent his curse from activating. Have you thought about how he might apply these to other areas of his life? For example, rather than just 'healing energy' Byrn could use his natural element- fire- to cauterize wounds. Unexpected uses of his already known powers, rather than adding powers.

I can't wait for the next installment.
